June edition of post-16 citizenship e-news

Posted: 10 June 2010

Welcome to the June edition of post-16 citizenship e-news keeping you up-to-date with the latest news, events and resources available from the Post-16 Citizenship Support Programme.

Citizenship and the politics of football

We couldn’t let the World Cup come and go without producing some engaging activities for use with learners that explore football from a citizenship perspective. So, our new resource A game of two halves: the politics of football does just that. The pack contains activities that explore football in the media, club ownership, players’ wages, FIFA’s choice of host nations and anti-racism campaigns. Please do give us your feedback on using the resources by emailing citizenship@lsnlearning.org.uk

Fully funded customised training in post-16 citizenship

Customised training is designed to improve the quality and range of your citizenship provision. Our focus will be to equip your staff, at all levels, with the knowledge and skills to organise and deliver effective active citizenship learning. You will have the opportunity to receive dedicated training and support for staff in-house which will be delivered by experienced trainers with extensive knowledge of post-16 citizenship education. You can select from a range of flexible training packages on key themes which can be tailored to your own needs. For full details and to apply visit www.post16citizenship.org/customisedtraining

Citizenship e-toolkit

Our  new e-toolkit ‘Creating a citizenship-rich organisation’ is designed to help you make citizenship central to your organisation. It is supported by a new quick guide with key messages about whole organisation approaches and how citizenship learning can support you in meeting requirements such as those set out in Every Child Matters.

Post-16 citizenship development projects

Following the success of a range of development projects supported last year, we are pleased to offer further opportunities to organisations wishing to explore a particular aspect of citizenship provision and improve practice. You are invited to submit a proposal on any aspect of citizenship education that is of particular interest to your organisation. Themes you may wish to consider (although other themes are welcomed) could include:

· Community cohesion through citizenship – for example inter-generational projects
· Citizenship for ESOL learners
· Citizenship projects in offender learning
· Citizenship projects in Foundation Learning
· AS and A Level Citizenship Studies

We are keen to support a range of projects to promote innovation in citizenship teaching and learning and that could involve collaborative working. We will support projects with small payments to help cover costs.

To apply please complete and return an application form to citizenship@lsnlearning.org.uk no later than Thursday 1 July 2010.

Please note successful projects will be required to attend a meeting in London on Thursday 15 July 2010.
